ACA Kayak Instructor Training Levels 3 & 4
This course is designed to prepare participants with the professional skills needed to teach whitewater kayaking. NOC’s training will certify up to Level 4 ACA Kayak Instructor.
Our Kayak Instructor Training Course is designed to prepare participants with the professional skills needed to teach whitewater kayaking. NOC’s training will certify up to a Level 4 ACA Kayak Instructor.
Participants will work on refining both hard and soft skills including teaching methodology, a focus on student learning styles, group management, as well as rescue prevention and hands-on rescue.
Certification in these courses are based on both paddling and teaching skills and is not guaranteed at any level. These courses are only for those with intermediate to advanced paddling skills, see listed requirements.

What to Expect
This comprehensive course is a hands-on approach to prepare participants with the professional skills needed to teach whitewater kayaking. Students will gear up at the beginning of the course and meet their instructors and group. Most of guide school week will be spent on NOC’s main campus on the Nantahala River so participants can build on their newly acquired skills. Instruction and meals are in a group setting which creates bonding and camaraderie.
NOC provides gear bags, paddling jackets, wetsuits and booties, lunch daily, and ACA certified instruction.

Participants will need to provide the individual gear outlined below. Discounts at the Outfitter’s Store are provided for course participants.
- Boat, Paddle, PFD, Sprayskirt, Helmet
- Shorts or Swimwear
- Water shoes or old sneakers
- Synthetic T-shirts
- Sunscreen/Lip balm
- Towel and Change of clothes
- Reusable water bottle
- Clothing and personal items
- Rain gear
- Synthetic long underwear

These courses are only for those with intermediate to advanced paddling skills. Prior to signing up for this course, participants must:
- Be 18 Years of Age or Older
- Be able to confidently paddle Class III-IV Whitewater
- Have the ability to self-rescue
- Have the ability to help with group rescues in Class III water
Lunch is included in the course fee. Additional meals, snacks, and beverages can be purchased at NOC’s two onsite restaurants or the General Store.
