2015 NOC’s Nantahala Games Rules
Slalom 101
Slalom is a race of speed and precision. Competitors strive to reach the finish line as fast as possible, while negotiating a series of gates without touching or missing any. A two-second penalty is added for each touched gate, and a 50-second penalty is added for a missed gate. Each competitor can take two runs, the fastest of which counts as the final score.
Basic Slalom Rules
- All gates must be negotiated in numerical order.
- All gates must be negotiated in the designated direction: upstream for red gates and downstream for green gates.
- Contact with either pole with any part of the boat, body, or equipment constitutes a touch (two-second penalty). Touching both poles does not compound the penalty points. The entire head and part of the boat must cross through the gate-line at the same time. Failure to do this results in a miss (50-second penalty).

- Touching or crossing the gate-line of any gate before negotiating a gate that precedes it in numerical order results in a 50-second penalty for the missed gate.
- Moving a gate pole intentionally results in a 50-second penalty.
- Crossing a gate-line while upside down results in a 50-second penalty.
- In the C-2 or OC-2 class, one competitor crossing the gate-line while the other passes outside it results in a 50-second penalty.
- Swimming during the run results in a DNF (Did Not Finish) for that run.
Rules Specific to the Nantahala Games
All competitors can take two runs in up to two classes.
If the timers miss a run, the competitor will be awarded a rerun.
Competitors are welcome to view their times and inquire with the Scoring Chief about their race. However, please refrain from talking to the Finish or Gate Judges so that they can focus on the task at-hand.
Club Scoring and Grand Prize
Club scores will be added up and announced at the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon
The Grand Prize, a new Dagger Mamba 8.1, will be awarded to the club with the highest score and the runner up will recieve an AT paddle
Slalom, Freestyle, and Downriver Scoring
Points will be awarded according to the following rubric for each class. Classes must have a minimum of 3 competitors to earn placement points. Participants competing in classes of less than three will still earn one participation point.

Freestyle Scoring
Freestyle scoring will us a 1-10 scoring system based on overall run. The bigger the judge’s smile during your run the better you score is likely to be!
