2025 NOC Guides of the Year

At the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), we’re much more than just an adventure destination for whitewater rafting or serene mountain hikes, we’re a vibrant community united by a passion for outdoor experiences. Central to this community are our guides.
Every year, we take great joy in honoring a select group of guides who truly exemplify the spirit of adventure and excellence that we cherish at NOC. These remarkable individuals not only ensure our guests navigate the rivers and trails safely, but they also ignite a deep appreciation for the great outdoors, crafting cherished memories that last a lifetime. With great excitement, let’s introduce the NOC’s 2025 Guides of the Year!

Central Reservations Office: Quentin Brunson
Since returning to the NOC team in 2023, Quentin has been a steady hand and a welcoming voice for guests booking their adventures. His deep knowledge of NOC offerings and his calm, solutions-focused approach make every interaction feel effortless. Peers highlight his professionalism, positive attitude, and the way he uplifts his team during even the busiest shifts. Quentin represents the very best of guest experience at NOC.

Chattahoochee River, Roswell: Cole Harvey
Cole may not seek the spotlight, but his quiet leadership shines on the Chattahoochee. Known for his calm demeanor under pressure and his refusal to complain no matter the chaos, Cole inspires his team through steady resilience and genuine passion. Over three seasons he has become a pillar for his fellow guides, an example of growth, grit, and heart.

Chattahoochee River, Metro: Trevor Schmitt
Trevor joined the Metro Hooch team on opening day and has grown remarkably in a short time. From learning the river to becoming a trusted takeout pro, he embodies NOC’s make-it-happen spirit. Always ready to lend a hand, Trevor’s positive energy and willingness to jump in wherever needed have quickly made him a cornerstone of the outpost.

Chattahoochee River Camps: Natalie Waters
In her first season, Natalie has made an immediate impact at the Chattahoochee Camps Program. With quick wit and a welcoming personality, she became a camper favorite while holding true to NOC’s highest standard: memorable experiences paired with uncompromising care. Natalie exemplifies what it means to create adventures that kids—and their families—remember long after campfire embers fade.

Pigeon River: Sydney Ferguson
Sydney returned for her third season and stepped into true leadership on the Pigeon River. As both a reliable Trip Leader and trainer for new guides across two rivers, she led by example every day. Sydney’s biggest leap this season was in the exceptional guest service she delivered, pairing technical skill with a warm, personal touch that left lasting impressions.

French Broad River: Thomas Hillis
Thomas embodies service before self. Whether photo boating, leading trips, or supporting teammates in countless behind-the-scenes ways, he kept the French Broad operation running strong. His flexibility, leadership growth, and ability to make it happen set a high bar for his peers. Thomas is a cornerstone of the team and a model of leading by example.

Ocoee River: Ash Peterson
This season marked a breakthrough for Ash, who stepped into new responsibilities as both a Trip Leader and Upper Guide. With a tireless work ethic and an unfailingly positive attitude, Ash became a leader both on and off the water. The Ocoee team is proud to celebrate Ash’s growth and impact as their 2025 Guide of the Year.

River’s End Restaurant: Jordan Woodson
Jordan’s journey from Dining Room Supervisor to Front of House Supervisor reflects her commitment to excellence. Known for her uplifting presence and supportive leadership, she inspires both guests and teammates daily. Jordan’s growth, professionalism, and passion for creating exceptional dining experiences make her a standout in 2025.

Big Wesser Riverside Pub: Allison Coker
As barista extraordinaire, Allison pours more than coffee, she pours joy into every guest experience. Her humor, creativity, and warm energy keep people coming back, not just for drinks and donuts, but for connection. Allison’s dedication and character make her a shining example of how small moments create lasting memories.

Paddling School: Haley “Happy” McKee
Instructor Haley brought unmatched energy and thoughtful leadership to NOC’s Paddling School this year. From the First Descents group programs to NOC’s advanced teen paddling camps, she inspired students through both skill and compassion. Featured in American Whitewater for her work on anxiety management in paddling, Haylee continues to expand what instruction can mean. Her versatility and dedication mark her as one of NOC’s finest educators.

Aerial & Bike: Matthew Albitz
Whether guiding bike trips or stepping in as a driver for Aerials, Matthew’s positivity and work ethic never wavered. His willingness to help and consistent presence made him indispensable this season, from trips at Tsali Trails to busy days on the ropes. Matthew embodies the can-do attitude that keeps adventures running smoothly.

NOC Outfitter’s Store: Walt Haugen
Walt is the quiet leader everyone looks up to. Embodying all of NOC’s core values, he encourages teammates, serves with humility, and leads by example. Known for his positive demeanor, passion for outdoor play, and readiness to step in whenever needed, Walt truly represents the spirit of work hard, play hard.

NOC Gatlinburg: Todd Petree
Todd’s teammates describe him as a delight to work with—professional, upbeat, and always willing to go above and beyond. His initiative and high-quality work make a significant impact on the Gatlinburg store and the larger NOC family. Todd exemplifies reliability and joy in equal measure and is a stand out member of our NOC Gatlinburg Retail Store.

Chattooga River: Paul Weston
Paul is relentless in his pursuit of excellence. From taking on challenging crews to mentoring peers, he approaches guiding with humility, study, and joy (plus snacks). His leadership from the front and his dedication to growth have elevated not just himself, but the entire Chattooga Rafting team.

Nantahala River Rafting Guide of the Year: Caroline Ahrons
Caroline’s first year as a Lead Guide and POD Instructor showcased her steady leadership and unwavering calm. She actively sought ways to strengthen the Nantahala operation and mentored new guides along the way. Embodying every NOC core value, Caroline is the model of grace under pressure and inspiration in the community.

Adventure Deck: Morgan Lawrence
As a first-year staff member, Morgan dove in with curiosity and dedication. She quickly mastered complex systems and became known for her willingness to help guests and coworkers alike. Always upbeat, Morgan set the tone for her department and has already established herself as a key member of the team.

Sales Team: Thomas Gibson
Thomas returned to NOC in 2025 and immediately made an impact by bridging sales and operations. Taking ownership beyond his role, he stepped in to lead coordination for groups with professionalism and adaptability. His ability to problem-solve and deliver consistently makes him a true asset and a deserving honoree.

Support Staff: Ron Mitschke
Ron is the definition of quiet excellence. A long-standing member of the NOC family, he is dependable, humble, and ever willing to support wherever needed. His steady presence strengthens every team he touches, and his dedication reflects the very heart of NOC’s community spirit.
Honoring the Heart of NOC
The Guides of the Year remind us why NOC was founded more than fifty years ago: to create a place where passion, community, and the outdoors come together. Their stories show that guiding is more than a job, it’s a way of life, one that connects people to each other and to the wild places we cherish.
