Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just looking for a quick getaway, these micro-adventures will inspire your adventure in Tallulah Gorge.

This September, we are just back from an awe-inspiring adventure in Tallulah Gorge in Georgia and are excited to share our adventure in the hopes that you can make a long weekend of it!

This geological blue ribbon, just a stone’s throw from our Chattooga River Rafting outpost, boasts one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern United States. Tallulah Gorge offers an outdoor experience that will leave every adventurer in awe with its dramatic waterfalls, trails, and serene beauty.

Tallulah Gorge Waterfall

Tallulah Gorge State Park is a must-see gem, home to a breathtaking two-mile-long gorge that plunges nearly 1,000 feet deep. #Protip: There’s a $5 park fee, and trust us, it’s worth every penny! Why? We’ll get into that shortly. First, here’s a handy suggestion: bring a $5 bill. You can pay by scanning the QR code with your phone—if you have service—but let’s be honest, when you’re buzzing with excitement about your upcoming adventure, the last thing you want is to fumble with your phone. So, drop that $5 bill in the envelope and head straight for adventure. You’ll be glad you did!

The main park entrance is at the intersection at Hwy 441 and Jane Hurt Yarn Road.

Exploring the Gorge: From Waterfalls to Wallenda

Tallulah Gorge State Park welcomes you with a 16,000-square-foot interpretive center. You’ll find informative exhibits, taxidermized animals, and hands-on learning experiences on the area’s rich cultural, historical, and natural wonders here. Check out a film that provides a captivating overview of the gorge’s ecosystem and history. A park ranger is here to answer any questions you may have for your adventure in Tallulah Gorge.

Tallulah Gorge State Park Interpretive Center

Once you’ve got your bearings, it’s time to hit the trails! Right out of the back of the center, the walking path heads into the gorge.

For looky-loos who are not too fond of stairs, we recommend the “rim” tour. Exit the interpretive center out the back and take a left! Head out to the north Wallenda Tower, and Overlook #1, where tightrope walkers once crossed, there is a scenic view of the gorge. Next, double back past the center to spot #3! The gold medal view!

We tackled the walk down the Hurricane trail, spot #2, to the suspension bridge, which slightly sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls. Yes, there are over 300 steps, but there are benches for snack breaks along the way. So, pack a water bottle and don’t forget to take in the view!

For the thigh and mighty, the Gorge Floor Trail is worth it, but remember, what goes down must climb back up, and it also needs a pass! Stop at the interpretive center for more information and check the website, as they do not issue passes on scheduled water release dates or rainy days! It takes about 2-3 hours to complete and involves some serious stair climbing, but trust us, the vistas are worth every step on this adventure in Tallulah Gorge.

Paddling and Swimming in Tranquility

Nothing about this adventure is formal, but don’t forget to pack your suit! After an invigorating hike, unwind with a tranquil paddle or swim in Tallulah Falls Lake. Swimming at the beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and paddling is accessible year-round. It provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, perfect for an afternoon paddle. Since the lake is motorboat-free, a kayak or paddleboard trip is very peaceful, and access is covered by your $5 park fee.

We couldn’t resist checking out the climbing wall and sampling the delicious food at the cafe. The grassy area provides a perfect relaxing spot to soak in nature and enjoy the lively atmosphere. The Firey Flautas were top notch! The menu has something for everyone and a view to boot!
