Chattooga River, SC
Whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River stands as a truly memorable adventure in the Southeast. In 1974, this river was honored with the “Wild & Scenic” designation by Congress, ensuring its majestic river gorge remains untouched. The Chattooga River captivates with its stunning scenery, cherished rapids, and pristine wilderness ambiance.
Section 3 of the Chattooga welcomes those aged 8 and older for a gentler rafting journey. This portion allows kids and adults alike to revel in swimming spots, navigate Class II-III rapids, and experience a thrilling Class IV conclusion at Bull Sluice. Meanwhile, Section 4 is suited for those aged 12 and up, escalating the excitement with Seven Foot Falls and climaxing with the renowned Five Falls—a sequence of heart-racing Class IV rapids. Both excursions include a picturesque lunch stop by the river or near Long Creek Falls.
Since its founding in 1972, NOC has been at the forefront of guiding expeditions on the Chattooga, with our company founder, Payson Kennedy, even performing stunts in the film “Deliverance”, which showcased the Chattooga River. Our guides at the Chattooga are among the best whitewater navigators in the country, benefiting from unparalleled training and access to the latest river gear.
