Afternoon: Downtown Gatlinburg Attractions

Head to the Gatlinburg SkyPark for an open-air chairlift ride to an 1,800-ft. overlook with panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains. The SkyPark also features the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America.  

Explore downtown Gatlinburg along the Parkway, the main strip known for its shops, attractions, and entertainment.

Ride the Gatlinburg Space Needle for sunset views overlooking downtown Gatlinburg and the surrounding Smoky Mountains.

Day 2: Pigeon River Rafting & Scenic Smoky Mountain Drive

An adventure-filled day featuring whitewater rafting and scenic views in the Smoky Mountains. 

Morning: Pigeon River Rafting

Head to the NOC Pigeon River Outpost, located about a 45-minute drive from downtown Gatlinburg, TN. 

Pigeon River Rafting Highlights:

Rafters on the Pigeon River Rafting: Lower Pigeon Gorge trip

Choose your white water rafting adventure:

  • Upper Pigeon River: An action-packed white water adventure with Class III–IV rapids like Accelerator and Roller Coaster (ages 8+)
  • Lower Pigeon River: A gentle, scenic float ideal for younger kids and first-time rafters (ages 3+)  

Afternoon: Scenic Drive & Waterfall Hike

Drive back to Gatlinburg via the Foothills Parkway for sweeping mountain views! Bring a packed lunch and enjoy it at one of the scenic overlooks along the way.

The Foothills Parkway offers gorgeous views of rolling green mountains with a variety of overlooks to choose from.

Scenic Overlooks on the Foothills Parkway:  

  • Greasy Cove Overlook – 1,603 feet, faces northwest (milepost 4.7) 
  • Allen Grove Overlook – 1,948 ft. elevation, faces northwest (milepost 3.6) 
  • Green Mountain Overlook – 2,136 feet, faces southeast (milepost 2.2) 
  • Cosby Overlook – 1,811 feet, faces southwest (milepost 1.4) 

 Still craving more time in nature? Take a short detour into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to hike to the stunning Hen Wallow Falls. 

Hen Wallow Falls hike information:  

  • Distance: 4.3 miles roundtrip 
  • Difficulty: Moderate, with some steep sections and switchbacks 
  • Elevation Gain: 964 feet 
  • Features: Hardwood forests filled with hemlock and rhododendron. Plus, a 90-ft waterfall.  

 Tip: Keep an eye out for salamanders in the streams along the trail but avoid moving rocks to protect their habitat. 

Evening: Dinner & Entertainment

Refuel with dinner back in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Looking for entertainment while you eat? The area offers several dinner shows featuring pirates, cowboys, and classic Appalachian lore.

  • Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show – Chow down on a four-course meal with fried chicken, ham, mac-and-cheese and dessert, all while watching a pirate battle complete with mermaids, sea lions, and daring acrobatics.  
  • Dolly Parton’s Stampede – An East Tennessee classic, Dolly Parton’s Stampede offers horse riding stunts, comedy, competition, and aerials – plus an original song by Dolly Parton. A four-course meal with rotisserie chicken, pulled pork, assorted sides, and dessert is included. 

After dinner – if you still have the energy – enjoy mini golf or a family attraction like The Island in Pigeon Forge, featuring shopping and rides like the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel.

 

Day 3: Great Smoky Mountains National Park Exploration

Relaxing nature-focused day with wildlife and easy family hikes.

Morning: Cade’s Cove

A ~55-minute drive from Gatlinburg, Cade’s Cove is a scenic valley surrounded by mountains. Early entry into the park is best for wildlife sightings. Explore the 11-mile scenic loop with frequent wildlife (deer, black bears, turkeys) to see historic cabins, homesites, cemeteries, and churches. 

Afternoon: Picnic Lunch and Easy Hikes

Enjoy a picnic lunch at Cade’s Cove Picnic Area. This picnic area offers 81 scenic picnic sites with grills, restrooms, and creekside views.

Trip planning

Do I need a car to follow this itinerary?

Yes. While downtown Gatlinburg is very walkable, you will need transportation to access white water rafting, scenic drives, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

When is the best time to visit Gatlinburg and the Pigeon River?

Southern Appalachia is gorgeous year-round! But April through October is the best time for visitors interested the area’s plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking and white water rafting.

 

Lodging

If I stay at the Elkmont campground, do the gates close at a certain time?

No, they stay open at all times. This is perfect if you want a night out in Gatlinburg but still want to camp.

What are the age requirements for rafting the Pigeon at NOC?

Upper Pigeon trips require guests to be 8+ years old. Lower Pigeon trips welcome guests as young as 3!

How intense is rafting on the Pigeon River?

The Upper Pigeon offers exciting, splashy class III and IV rapids, while the Lower Pigeon provides a calmer float trip. Both activities are suitable for beginners and guided by NOC’s professionally trained staff.

Will we have to hike the 11-mile Cade’s Cove Loop Trail?

Only on Wednesdays! Cars are permitted on the loop on all days except Wednesday from May through September. Guests are able to drive the loop and park to hike and explore.

When are the restrooms open in Cade’s Cove?

Picnic area restrooms are open year-round. They are open from 9:00-5:00 in the summertime.

Is there a minimum age to ride the lift at the SkyPark?

No, all ages are welcome at this attraction! Children under 5 actually receive free admission. 

Are the dinner shows family friendly?

Yes! Both the recommended dinner shows are perfect for children and feature clean comedy and interactive entertainment like live animal tricks. Both shows are committed to the humane treatment of the animals in their shows and partner with experts to manage their care.
