After dinner, head to the fire pit for s’mores, lawn games, and a chance for students to bond before the big days ahead. Lights out at 9:00 PM keeps everyone rested and ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Full Day in the Nantahala Gorge

A packed day of adventure and education. Students rotate through activities designed to challenge, inspire, and build real teamworking skills.

Morning: Split-Group Adventure Activities

After a group breakfast at Relia’s Garden, groups choose from a lineup of activities that can be mixed and matched to fit your students’ interests and comfort levels:

  • Treetop Adventure Park + Zip — Zip into the park and navigate two tiers of ropes courses suspended in the trees above the gorge. A confidence-building challenge that pushes students to problem-solve and support each other up in the canopy.
  • Mountaintop Zip Line — Soar above the Nantahala Gorge on one of the Southeast’s most scenic zip line tours. A thrilling, memorable experience with sweeping mountain views.
  • Wilderness Education Course — A hands-on field course with SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine covering real wilderness survival skills like shelter building, fire starting, and water sourcing. Ideal for outdoor education curricula and students who want to engage deeply with the natural world.
  • Guided Nature Hike — Explore the gorge at a quieter pace with a knowledgeable NOC guide along the Appalachian Trail or Flint Ridge Trails. Great for students who want a more reflective outdoor experience.

Larger groups split into two smaller parties, so everyone stays active throughout the morning. Students are provided with a bagged lunch to refuel following the first activity.

Afternoon: Groups Switch Tracks

After lunch, the small groups swap activities so every student gets a full experience before the day is done. By 5:00 PM, everyone has earned their dinner back at Relia’s Garden.

Evening: Fireside Programming

After dinner, NOC brings the gorge to life with an optional evening program. Choose from a Fireside Cherokee Storytelling session, rich with the cultural history of the region, or a live Mountain Musician performance under the stars.

Day 3: Last Adventure & Departure

Send your students home with sore arms, big smiles, and a white water memory that’ll last a lifetime.

Morning: Checkout & Hit the River

After a final group breakfast at Relia’s Garden, get luggage packed and lodging checked out before heading down to the river. By mid-morning, the whole group comes back together for a fully guided white water rafting trip down the Nantahala. No experience necessary! NOC’s professional guides handle all the instruction and safety so students can focus on the fun. The Nantahala is the perfect send-off river: exciting enough to get everyone cheering, approachable enough that every student can paddle confidently from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions About School Group Trips at NOC

How far in advance should we book our school group trip?

We recommend reaching out at least 90 days in advance, especially for spring and fall dates which tend to fill quickly. That said, our group coordinators will do their best to accommodate all inquiries — contact us and we’ll let you know what’s available.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

NOC is equipped to host groups of a wide range of sizes, from small classes to large grade-level retreats. Contact our groups sales manager at 828-785-5010 to discuss what works best for your specific group.

What age groups are your school programs best suited for?

Our programs are designed to accommodate middle and high school students, with activities and challenge levels that can be tailored to your group’s age and experience. Our group coordinators will help match the right activities to your students.

Do students need prior outdoor or white water experience?

Not at all. All of our guided activities — including white water rafting — are designed to be accessible to first-timers. NOC’s professionally trained guides provide thorough safety briefings and instruction before every activity so every student can participate with confidence.

What lodging options are available for school groups?

NOC offers two primary lodging options for school groups: the Basecamp Bunkhouse, a bunk-style lodge with bathrooms and a group dining area, and larger private cabins that can house up to 20 guests each. Your group coordinator will help you choose the best fit based on your group size and budget.

What does a typical meal plan look like?

Group meals are served at Relia’s Garden, NOC’s dedicated group dining area supplied by the onsite River’s End restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner can all be arranged as part of your package, with grab-and-go options like wraps and pizza available for days when the group is out on the river or trails.

How does the activity scheduling work for larger groups?

For larger groups, NOC’s coordinators build a rotating schedule so students cycle through multiple activities across the day. This keeps everyone active and engaged without long waits, and ensures every student gets the full experience.

How does NOC take measures to prioritize student safety?

Safety is NOC’s top priority. All guides are professionally trained and certified, and every activity begins with a thorough safety briefing for participants. NOC has been operating guided outdoor programs since 1972 and has a long track record of hosting youth groups from across the Southeast.

Can we customize the itinerary to fit our school's curriculum or learning goals?

Absolutely. NOC specializes in building custom itineraries that balance adventure, outdoor education, and downtime. Whether your trip has a specific academic focus — like environmental science or leadership development — or you simply want to give students a meaningful time outside, our team will work with you to shape the right program.
