This 3-day Smoky Mountains fall itinerary combines a stay in the Nantahala Gorge with whitewater rafting, ziplining above the treetops, and a day exploring Cherokee and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Make Nantahala Outdoor Center your home base and experience fall in the Smokies from the river, the ridgeline, and everywhere in between.

Day 1: Settle Into the Nantahala Gorge
Afternoon: Check In at The Hemlocks
Start your Smoky Mountain fall getaway with a scenic drive into the Nantahala Gorge and check in at The Hemlocks, NOC’s mountainside bungalows tucked among the trees near the Nantahala River.
Settle into your bungalow, relax on the deck, or stretch your legs with a walk around NOC’s 500-acre campus. You’ll be close to the Nantahala River, Appalachian Trail, Fontana Lake, and miles of Western North Carolina mountain scenery.

Dinner Along the Nantahala River
Head down to the river for dinner at River’s End Restaurant or Big Wesser Riverside Pub. Afterward, enjoy a quiet fall evening back at The Hemlocks. Cozy up by the fireplace, spend some time on the deck, or gather around the shared fire pit before calling it a night.

Day 2: Experience Fall in the Smoky Mountains from River to Ridge
For your first full day, experience two completely different perspectives on fall in the Smoky Mountains, starting on the Nantahala River before heading high above the treetops.
Morning: Fall Rafting on the Nantahala River
Cooler temperatures, colorful forests, and fewer summer crowds make autumn a great time to experience the Nantahala River.
Head out on an eight-mile guided Nantahala River rafting trip, combining splashy Class II and III white water with calmer stretches where you can take in the surrounding fall scenery. Finish the trip with a run through Class III Nantahala Falls.
After rafting, change into dry clothes and grab lunch on campus. Spend some time beside the river or browse the NOC Outfitter’s Store before your next adventure.

Afternoon: See the Fall Colors on the Mountaintop Zip Line
Next, trade river views for a completely different perspective on the mountains.
NOC’s Mountaintop Zip Line Tour features nearly two miles of zip lines through the forest canopy, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding mountains. Finish with the half-mile Mega Zip, soaring high above the treetops.
If you want to pack both adventures into one day, NOC’s River to Ridge package combines a guided Nantahala rafting trip and Mountaintop Zip Line Tour.

Evening: Dinner in Bryson City
After a full day outside, grab dinner in Bryson City and head back to The Hemlocks. Settle in for a cozy evening surrounded by the quiet forests of the Nantahala Gorge.
Dinner recommendations: The Rice Wagon, Native Brews, The Bistro at the Everett Hotel
Day 3: Spend a Fall Day in Cherokee & Great Smoky Mountains National Park
No Smoky Mountains fall itinerary is complete without spending some time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For your final day, head to nearby Cherokee for a mix of Cherokee history, riverside scenery, hiking, and fall color.

Morning: Visit Oconaluftee Indian Village
Begin your day at the Oconaluftee Indian Village, where you can learn about Cherokee culture and history through a recreation of an 18th-century Cherokee community.
Explore historic structures, watch traditional craft demonstrations, and learn more about the culture of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians before continuing your day in Cherokee.
Midday: Picnic Along the Oconaluftee River
Pick up lunch in Cherokee and head to Oconaluftee Island Park for a picnic beside the river. Take your time over lunch, walk along the water, and enjoy the changing leaves before continuing toward Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Afternoon: Explore Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Continue toward the Oconaluftee Visitor Center at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For an easy fall hike in the Smoky Mountains, explore the Oconaluftee River Trail. The mostly flat trail follows the river through low-elevation forest, providing an easy way to enjoy the park’s fall scenery.
Before leaving, keep an eye out for elk in the Oconaluftee area. Fall coincides with elk rutting season, making autumn an especially interesting time to visit, but always give wildlife plenty of space and follow National Park Service guidelines.
