So, you’ve probably heard about après-ski: post-skiing activities characterized by cozy lodges, mulled wine, live music, and sometimes, rowdy parties. But what about après-raft? While it’s not a widely used term, there’s a definite post-river culture for whitewater enthusiasts once the paddles are stowed and the rapids are behind them.
What is Après-Raft?
Allow us to paint a picture: The last paddle stroke has been taken and the raft is hauled ashore. You’re sun-kissed, maybe a little sore, and still excited from the hours spent navigating rapids. But the day isn’t over yet! It’s time for après-raft, that sweet spot after a day on the water where wet gear is swapped for cozy hoodies, cold drinks materialize, and stories of the day’s biggest splashes are retold around fire pits or burgers. The culture of après-raft is all about stretching the joy of the river into the evening hours.
Food and Drink Rituals

In the Nantahala Gorge after hours on the river, nothing hits quite like a hearty meal shared with your crew. At Nantahala Outdoor Center, the après-raft scene starts steps from the takeout, where the smell of burgers, barbecue, and wood-fired pizzas greets guests after a long day. Whether you’re grabbing a casual riverside bite, lingering over a meal with views of the water, or packing a Blue Ridge Parkway picnic, food is an essential part of the post-paddle ritual.
Riverside Eats
At NOC, we’re always ready to serve guests with urgent cases of post-paddle hunger. The takeout, located right on campus, is a hop, skip, and a jump from Big Wesser, our riverfront pub and grill. Think burgers, barbecue, some of the best nachos you’ll ever eat, and views of the river that provided a day’s worth of fun. Pull up some chairs, grab a craft beer or glass of wine, and share laughs and good food on the patio as the sun drops behind the mountains and the air gets crisp.
Looking for something a little more plush after hours spent in nature? Your group may want to opt for River’s End Restaurant, NOC’s gastropub featuring local trout, artisan pizza, and table service. All with an extensive beer, wine, and cocktail menu and views of the Nantahala River, of course.

Picnic on the Parkway
As we welcome autumn in the Nantahala Gorge, it is the perfect time to grab your friends and enjoy a picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway to unwind and enjoy the fall colors.
We’re fortunate to have a long leaf season. The Nantahala Gorge is around 1,800 feet of elevation at its lowest and usually reaches peak leaf season in mid-October through early-November. But the leaves on the Blue Ridge Parkway’s highest ridges hit their peak much sooner, usually around the first and second weeks of October. Use this interactive map to explore areas around Bryson City to find the perfect leaf viewing spots.
Here’s a week-by-week guide for catching peak fall colors near Bryson City:

Enjoy Local Brews and Wines
Western North Carolina offers many options when it comes to local breweries and wineries, which make perfect places to relax after a day on the Nantahala River. Mountain Layers Brewing Company in Bryson City is close to the NOC and offers expertly brewed beers and a lively atmosphere. Check out their events schedule for live music dates and don’t forget to try their seasonal brews! If your crew prefers wine, Deep Creek Winery is another locally loved, laid back option. Get comfy on their patio and enjoy hand-crafted wine tastings with charcuterie, including fresh Amish cheese and local salami, and mountain views.
Nature Walks and Scenic Strolls
After your raft is ashore, it feels good to stretch your legs and wander a bit. Squeezing in a little more time in nature is an added bonus. Close to Bryson City, Deep Creek offers beautiful creekside scenery, cascading waterfalls, and gentle trails. This area is especially gorgeous in the fall, with peak color stretching into late October and early November. From NOC, you can step onto the Appalachian Trail nearby to take in forest views – but be warned that the trail gets steep quickly!

Board Games & Backyard Hangs
After stretching your legs on a nature walk, one of the best ways to keep the energy going is with a little friendly competition. The spirit of play is alive and well at Big Wesser’s backyard, the ideal after adventure hangout, where a set of cornhole boards is always waiting. It’s the perfect low-key competition: grab a drink, gather your crew, and test your aim while reliving the most exciting parts of the day’s run.

A little too tuckered out for cornhole? There’s plenty of space to set up board games at riverside picnic tables. Whether it’s a classic card game or a quick party favorite, board games are a relaxing way to keep the good times going, perfect for slowing down and savoring the camaraderie of an après-raft evening.
Bonfire & S’mores
One of our favorite ways to celebrate a successful river day? A bonfire, s’mores, and plenty of tall tales. Head back to your cabin, find your coziest hoodie, crack open a cold beverage, and get a roaring fire going. Swap stories about the biggest rapids, the funniest wipeouts, or the quietest moments on the water. Toast marshmallows, laugh until your cheeks hurt, and let the warmth of the fire and the company of your crew carry the river’s energy into the evening.

A Day Well Spent
No matter how you choose to spend it, whether hiking a trail, tossing cornhole bags, sampling local brews, or gathering around a fire, the spirit of après-raft is all about extending the day’s adventure. So, the next time you hang up your PFD, remember: the fun doesn’t have to stop at takeout. Pour a drink, pull up a chair, and let the river day linger just a little longer.
