Day 1: Arrive in Chattanooga & Explore the Scenic City
Afternoon: Explore Downtown Chattanooga
Kick off your fall weekend in Chattanooga with an afternoon downtown. Take a walk across the Walnut Street Bridge, explore the Bluff View Art District, or follow a section of the Tennessee Riverwalk to enjoy cooler temperatures and early views of the changing leaves.
Leave some time to explore downtown before grabbing dinner at one of Chattanooga’s local restaurants.

Evening: Sunset Over the Tennessee River
Finish your first day with a view. Head toward Signal Mountain or another nearby overlook to watch the sun set across the Tennessee River and surrounding ridgelines.
Then, settle in for the night before a full day of adventure on the Ocoee River.
Day 2: Experience Fall on the Ocoee River
Morning: Take a Scenic Drive Toward the Ocoee
Head east from Chattanooga toward the mountains and the Ocoee River. Give yourself some extra time for the drive so you can enjoy the fall scenery as you approach the Cherokee National Forest and Ocoee River Gorge.
In October, changing leaves cover the surrounding ridges in shades of red, orange, and gold, making the journey part of the day’s adventure.

Midday: Go Fall Rafting on the Ocoee River
Trade the scenic drive for one of Southeast Tennessee’s biggest outdoor adventures with a guided Ocoee River rafting trip.
The Middle Ocoee packs continuous Class III white water into a five-mile stretch of river, including well-known rapids like Broken Nose and Tablesaw. NOC’s guided Middle Ocoee trips continue into October, giving you a chance to experience the river surrounded by fall scenery.
October weekends also tend to bring fewer crowds than the height of the summer rafting season, making fall a different way to experience this classic Southeastern whitewater river.
Afternoon: Follow the Ocoee Scenic Byway
After rafting, take your time heading back toward Chattanooga. US Highway 64 follows the Ocoee River through the gorge, with forested mountains rising on either side.
Stop at overlooks and recreation areas along the way, stretch your legs, and enjoy the changing leaves before returning to Chattanooga for dinner.
Day 3: Chase Fall Colors Around Chattanooga
Morning: Head to Lookout Mountain
Start your final morning above the city on Lookout Mountain, one of the most recognizable places to experience fall foliage around Chattanooga. Explore the mountain by car or choose one of the area’s attractions and overlooks before continuing your fall adventure.

Afternoon: Choose Your Fall Hike
Spend the afternoon on the trail. Chattanooga is surrounded by options ranging from quick walks to longer hikes with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
For a short trip with a big payoff, head to Signal Point for views across the Tennessee River Gorge. There’s a beautiful overlook 100 yards from the parking area. More ambitious hikers can check out Edward’s Point Trail, which offers stunning views of the gorge and a 4-mile round trip. Another popular option is Cloudland Canyon State Park’s five-mile West Rim Loop, located about 45-minutes from Chattanooga.
If fall color is your priority, Chattanooga’s foliage typically reaches its strongest period from around mid-October through early November, although exact timing varies by elevation and weather each year.

Evening: One Last Night in Chattanooga
Wrap up your Chattanooga fall getaway back in the city. Grab dinner, explore downtown, or find a spot along the Tennessee River for one last view before heading home.
Plan a Fall Trip to Chattanooga & the Ocoee River
Summer may be known for days on the water, but fall brings a completely different side of Chattanooga and the Ocoee River.
Cooler weather, colorful ridgelines, scenic drives, hiking, and fall rafting on the Ocoee River make it easy to build a weekend around the season. Spend a day tackling white water, another exploring Chattanooga, and plenty of time in between enjoying the fall scenery of Southeast Tennessee.
