The Digital Detox Challenge

We know that completely disconnecting can feel intimidating, especially when work emails, social media, group chats, and notifications constantly compete for your attention. That’s why we’re inviting guests to take part in our simple but meaningful challenge during their stay in the Nantahala Gorge: limit phone usage to just 15-30 minutes per day.

Before your trip, take a few small steps to help yourself fully unplug:

  • Let friends, family, and coworkers know you may respond more slowly than usual.
  • Create emergency plans and backup contacts for childcare, pet care, or other responsibilities at home.
  • Make activity reservations in advance so you spend less time on screens and more time in streams.
  • Set a daily 15-minute screen time limit or app timer on your phone.
  • Consider turning on “Do Not Disturb” or leaving your phone in your room during activities.

Don’t try to execute this challenge perfectly; just focus on being intentional with your screen time and present in the moment. Instead of reaching for your phone, reach for a journal or a good book. Spend your mornings listening to the river and your evenings around a fire pit instead of scrolling through someone else’s adventures.

Give yourself permission to unplug and simply be present.

Day 1: Settle In & Unplug

Slow down. Put the phone away. Let the river set the pace.

Plan to arrive at NOC in the early morning. The earlier you arrive, the more time you’ll have to explore campus and enjoy the outdoors. Before your trip, we recommend familiarizing yourself with NOC’s lodging check-in process and your activity reservation details so you can spend less time searching for information and more time relaxing by the river. Reserve activities well in advance to secure your spot!

Morning: Day Hike on the Appalachian Trail

After familiarizing yourself with the campus, the fun begins! Prepare your gear for a hike on the Appalachian Trail from NOC to Wesser Bald Fire Tower. This challenging but rewarding trek takes hikers deep into the Nantahala National Forest, offering long stretches of quiet forest and panoramic mountain views from one of Western North Carolina’s most iconic fire towers.

NOC to Wesser Bald Out-and-Back Hike Stats

  • Round-trip Mileage: Approximately 13 miles
  • Elevation Gain: Approximately 3,000 feet
  • Difficulty Level: Strenuous
  • Estimated Time: 6–8 hours round-trip

Important Considerations

  • Bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers for unpredictable mountain weather
  • Review the ten essentials for recreating outdoors
  • Cell service may be limited along portions of the trail (that’s the point!)
  • Trekking poles are recommended for the steep descent back to NOC
  • Start early to allow plenty of daylight for the return hike

Optional Challenge: Navigate with a Paper Map

For guests looking to take their digital detox one step further, consider hiking to Wesser Bald using a paper trail map instead of relying on your phone for navigation. Slowing down to study elevation profiles and following a physical map can help you feel more present in the landscape around you.

That said, safety always comes first. Hikers should still carry a fully charged phone with offline maps and satellite communication capabilities. Devices like the Garmin inReach Mini or similar GPS communicators are strongly recommended, as they can provide backup navigation and contact emergency services in areas with limited cell coverage.

Alternate Hike Options

  • Wesser Bald from Tellico Gap: A shorter, moderate out-and-back hike to the Wesser Bald Fire Tower with rewarding mountain views.
  • NOC to Tellico Gap One-Way Hike: Hike southbound from NOC and arrange a shuttle pickup at Tellico Gap to avoid the return trek.
  • Tsali Recreation Area Trails: Scenic lakeside trails near Fontana Lake with easier terrain and peaceful forest views.
  • NOC Riverside Walks: Casual walks around campus and along the river for guests seeking a slower-paced outdoor experience.

Forget a piece of gear? The NOC Outfitter’s Store has a wide variety of gear options for your hike!

Evening: Riverside Dining & Rest

After a full day on the trail, head back to NOC for a relaxed dinner at River’s End Restaurant overlooking the Nantahala River. Refuel with RER staples like specialty pizzas, wings, burgers, trout, sandwiches, fresh salads, and local craft beer.

When dinner wraps up, return to your accommodations and settle in for the evening. Whether you’re staying in a Trailside Cabin, Hemlocks Bungalow, Dogwood Lodge, Basecamp bunkhouse, or platform tent, this is the perfect time to fully lean into the digital detox experience.

Before unplugging for the night, make any necessary calls or check-ins with family, childcare providers, or pet sitters so you can relax knowing everything back home is taken care of. If you’re staying in one of NOC’s cabins, resist the temptation to turn on the TV or start scrolling. Instead, grab a book, journal about the day’s adventure, or sit outside and enjoy the evening on your private deck.

Day 2: Adventure from River to Ridge

Trade screen time for river time.

Morning: Slow Start & White Water Rafting

Start your morning slowly and intentionally. Sip coffee on the porch, read a few chapters of a book, stretch with a short yoga session, or spend time journaling beside the river before the day’s adventures begin.

When you’re ready, head to NOC’s Adventure Deck to check in for your Nantahala white water rafting trip. This classic eight-mile rafting experience combines splashy Class II and III rapids with scenic mountain views and crystal-clear water, making it one of the best ways to fully immerse yourself in the outdoors.

Day 3: Slow Down Before Heading Home

Train on the Rapid Transit: Rafting & Train Excursion Package trip

For this itinerary, we recommend the Tuckasegee River Excursion for a change of scenery after two days spent in the Nantahala Gorge. After your train excursion, head home feeling rested and refreshed. Whether your favorite moments came from rafting rapids, hiking to Wesser Bald, ziplining through the trees, or relaxing beside the river, we hope this time in the Smokies reminded you how good it feels to unplug every once in a while.

digital detox

What is a digital detox?

A digital detox is intentional time away from phones, social media, email, and other digital distractions. The goal is to reduce screen time and reconnect with real-world experiences and the outdoors.

What are the benefits of unplugging from technology?

Even a short break from screens can help guests:

  • Feel less stressed and mentally overwhelmed
  • Improve focus and attention span
  • Sleep better
  • Feel more present and connected to their surroundings
  • Spend more meaningful time with friends and family
  • Reconnect with hobbies like reading, journaling, and hiking
  • Reduce the constant pressure of notifications and social media

Many guests find that time spent outdoors helps them feel more rested and refreshed than they expected.

Do I need to completely give up my phone during my trip?

Not at all. This itinerary is about creating healthier boundaries with technology, not eliminating it entirely. Guests are encouraged to limit screen time when possible while still keeping devices available for safety, photos, maps, or important communication.

Why is NOC a good place for a digital detox?

NOC makes it easy to unplug because everything you need is right on campus including lodging, restaurants, outdoor adventures, riverside relaxation, and the Outfitter’s Store. Instead of driving between activities or constantly checking your phone, you can settle into the slower pace of the Nantahala Gorge and focus on enjoying your surroundings.

Is it normal to feel uncomfortable unplugging at first?

Absolutely. Many people don’t realize how often they reach for their phones until they intentionally step away from them. It can take time to adjust, but most guests find that after a day or two outdoors, they naturally stop thinking about their devices and become more present in the experience around them.
