When cooler weather arrives and the leaves begin to change, the mountains of North Georgia are one of the best places in the Southeast for a fall getaway. Scenic drives wind through colorful forests, waterfalls tumble through mountain gorges, and towns like Clayton offer plenty of places to eat, shop, and slow down between adventures.
If you’re looking for things to do in North Georgia in the fall, start with these eight ways to experience the season.
1. Go Fall Rafting on the Chattooga River
Fall color looks a little different from the middle of a Wild & Scenic river.
The Chattooga River flows through a largely undeveloped corridor along the Georgia-South Carolina border, surrounding paddlers with forest instead of roads and buildings. In fall, that wilderness setting becomes a colorful backdrop for one of the Southeast’s classic white water rafting experiences.
NOC offers two guided options. Chattooga Section 3 combines Class II-III rapids, swimming holes, and the Class IV Bull Sluice finale, while Section 4 steps up the intensity with challenging Class IV white water and the famous Five Falls.
If you’re searching for an adventurous way to experience fall in North Georgia, it’s hard to beat seeing the season from the river.

2. Hike Tallulah Gorge State Park
About 15 miles from Clayton, Tallulah Gorge State Park is one of North Georgia’s most dramatic landscapes. The gorge stretches approximately two miles and reaches nearly 1,000 feet deep.
But you don’t have to tackle a strenuous hike to enjoy the scenery. The North and South Rim Trails lead to a series of overlooks, while more ambitious visitors can descend the stairs toward the suspension bridge and Hurricane Falls. The forested slopes make Tallulah Gorge in the fall particularly scenic as the leaves begin to change.
3. Spend an Afternoon in Clayton
Make time between outdoor adventures to explore Clayton, Georgia, a small mountain town surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Downtown Clayton is home to local restaurants, shops, galleries, and nearby wineries, making it an easy place to spend a slower afternoon or evening. Grab lunch, browse downtown, and stick around for dinner before settling in for the night.
Clayton also makes a convenient starting point for exploring Tallulah Gorge, Black Rock Mountain, waterfalls, and the Chattooga River.

4. See the Views at Black Rock Mountain State Park
For big mountain views, head to Black Rock Mountain State Park, Georgia’s highest state park. Scenic overlooks provide sweeping views across the Blue Ridge Mountains, while several hiking trails let you spend more time exploring the forest. Higher elevations can also mean earlier fall color, making Black Rock Mountain a worthwhile stop when you’re chasing fall foliage in North Georgia.
5. Chase North Georgia Waterfalls
You don’t have to travel far around Rabun County before finding another waterfall. Minnehaha Falls is a favorite for a relatively short hike, while Angel and Panther Falls can be reached along another forested trail near Lake Rabun. Tallulah Gorge also offers several stunning waterfalls. Pair one or two waterfall hikes with a scenic drive for an easy fall afternoon.

6. Take a North Georgia Fall Scenic Drive
Sometimes the best way to experience fall in the North Georgia mountains is simply to get in the car and see where the road takes you. The highways and backroads around Clayton, Lake Rabun, Tallulah Falls, and the surrounding mountains pass through forests, small communities, lakes, and mountain valleys.
For an easy itinerary, connect Clayton with Black Rock Mountain State Park and Tallulah Gorge, leaving plenty of time for overlooks and spontaneous stops along the way.
7. Visit a North Georgia Winery
North Georgia’s mountain landscape is also home to a growing wine region, with vineyards scattered throughout the hills around towns like Clayton, Tiger, and Dahlonega. A winery visit can be an easy addition to a fall weekend, particularly after a morning hike or scenic drive. Several vineyards around Rabun County offer mountain views that become even more scenic as autumn color moves through the region. Check individual winery hours and reservation requirements before visiting.
8. Make a Weekend Out of It
With so much packed into a relatively small area, you don’t have to choose just one North Georgia fall activity. Spend one day rafting the Chattooga River before heading into Clayton for dinner. The next morning, hike at Tallulah Gorge or Black Rock Mountain, stop at a waterfall, and finish your trip with a scenic drive through the mountains.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Colors in North Georgia?
Fall foliage in North Georgia varies by elevation and weather conditions each year. Higher elevations generally begin changing first, followed by valleys and lower elevations as the season progresses. That variation can make early October a particularly rewarding time to explore the region. If one area hasn’t reached peak color yet, heading higher into the mountains may provide a completely different view.
Plan a Fall Getaway to North Georgia
Whether you’d rather spend the day hiking to waterfalls, exploring mountain towns, taking a scenic drive, or navigating the rapids of the Chattooga River, there are plenty of ways to get outside in North Georgia in the fall. Pick a few activities, give yourself time to explore, and make a weekend out of experiencing one of the Southeast’s most colorful seasons.
