Marshall, NC is a small, artsy mountain town located minutes from the NOC French Broad Outpost. Situated on the banks of the French Broad River with charming historic architecture, Marshall is a perfect pit stop on your way back to Asheville.

Day 3: Blue Ridge Parkway & Waterfall Hikes

Scenic drives, waterfalls, and easy hikes in Pisgah National Forest. 

Morning: Blue Ridge Parkway Scenic Drive

Drive south along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most scenic roads in the United States. Bring breakfast and coffee to enjoy at a scenic overlook. The Looking Glass Rock overlook at Milepost 417 provides a clear view of Looking Glass Rock, a 300-million-year-old pluton monolith.

Afternoon: Waterfalls & Relaxing Hikes in Pisgah National Forest 

Explore some of the area’s most accessible and family-friendly hikes near Asheville in Pisgah National Forest. Access US-276 South from the Blue Ridge Parkway and head toward Brevard to experience some of Southern Pisgah’s finest forest views, hikes, and activities.

  • Sliding Rock – Open seasonally with lifeguards from late May through Labor Day, this natural 60-ft waterslide is perfect for kids and adventurous adults.
  • Moore Cove Falls  – This 1.5-mile round-trip hike leads to a 50-ft waterfall with a large, accessible cave behind the falls. Walk behind the waterfall for a unique vantage point.
  • Looking Glass Falls – Just a short walk from the parking area, Looking Glass Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in North Carolina. This 60-ft waterfall has opportunities for wading and splashing at the base of the falls.

What time does the gate close to Lake Powhatan campground?

Lake Powhatan Campground’s main entrance gate closes at 10 PM and reopens at 7 AM daily, with quiet hours also in effect from 10 PM to 7 AM. The gate is generally closed but not locked, allowing campers to enter/exit if they close it behind them. Gatehouse hours for check-in are 8 AM–8 PM (March-Nov) and 10 AM–5 PM (winter).
White Water Rafting

What should I wear for whitewater rafting on the French Broad River?

Wear quick-drying clothing such as synthetic shorts and a T-shirt or swimsuit. Secure footwear (like sandals with straps, old sneakers, or water shoes) is required. Avoid cotton, and don’t forget sunscreen and a change of clothes for after your trip.

How intense are French Broad River rafting trips?

French Broad River trips through Nantahala Outdoor Center are great for beginner paddlers and families, featuring splashy class II and III rapids. Our full-day trip features one class IV rapid. Children 8+ years old are welcome to join. All guests are in the care of our professionally trained NOC guides for the duration of the trip!

How far in advance should I book French Broad River rafting trips?

It’s recommended to book your rafting trip at least a few days in advance during peak season (spring through fall), and earlier for weekends or holidays to ensure availability. Call 1-800-232-7238 to book.

What are the hours for the Biltmore Estate?

Biltmore House is open daily, typically from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though exact closing hours vary seasonally. Entry is exclusively via reserved time slots scheduled upon purchasing tickets. Arrive at the estate gate at least 30–60 minutes prior to your scheduled house entry time.

What are the operating hours of Marshall’s shops and galleries?

They vary depending on the season. We recommend checking out hours before you go. More information can be found here.

Do we need a pass for the Blue Ridge Parkway?
