October is the perfect time for Atlanta families to head north and enjoy fall at a higher elevation. Within a few hours of the city, winding mountain roads lead to colorful forests, waterfalls, small towns, scenic overlooks, and some of the Southeast’s best outdoor adventures.
And because fall color moves gradually from the highest peaks into lower mountain valleys, there isn’t just one weekend to plan a trip. In 2026, color is expected to develop throughout October and linger into early November at lower elevations.
If you’re looking for the best fall road trips from Atlanta, these five mountain getaways are close enough for a weekend while offering plenty to fill two or three days.
| Destination | Approx. Trip Time | Expected Peak Fall Color |

1. Cashiers, NC
Drive from Atlanta: About 2 hours, 45 minutes
Best for: Waterfalls, scenic drives and hiking
Expected peak color: Mid-October
Sitting at roughly 3,500 feet in elevation, Cashiers gives Atlanta travelers the chance to catch mountain color a little earlier in the season. But first things first, make sure you know how pronounce the town’s name. It’s “CASH-erz,” rhyming with “mashers.”
The drive itself is part of the experience. As you leave North Georgia and climb onto the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, the roads wind past forests, waterfalls and mountain overlooks. Once you arrive, hike Whiteside Mountain, visit Silver Run Falls, or make the trip to Whitewater Falls. You can also explore nearby Highlands or take a drive along US 64 to see how the foliage changes as you gain and lose elevation.
Weekend Highlights
- Hiking Whiteside Mountain
- Visiting Silver Run Falls & Whitewater Falls
- Exploring downtown Cashiers
- Taking a scenic drive toward Highlands
- Visiting Lake Glenville
- Exploring nearby sections of Nantahala National Forest
When to go for fall color: Cashiers is one of the earlier destinations on this list because of its elevation. Jackson County’s 2026 forecast expects higher elevations around Cashiers and the Blue Ridge Parkway to begin reaching peak color during the second week of October, with color continuing to develop across the area afterward.

2. Bryson City, NC
Drive from Atlanta: About 3 hours
Best for: Whitewater rafting, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, hiking, and mountain scenery
Expected peak color: Mid-to-late October
For a fall weekend that combines classic Smoky Mountain scenery with plenty of ways to get outside, head to Bryson City and the Nantahala Gorge.
Bryson City sits just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, while the Nantahala Gorge is surrounded by the mountains of Nantahala National Forest. In fall, changing leaves gradually work their way from the surrounding ridges into the river valley.
Make Nantahala Outdoor Center your base for the weekend and spend Saturday whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River. The eight-mile trip follows the forest-lined river through the gorge, offering a completely different perspective on the changing leaves. Back on land, explore the Appalachian Trail, ride the Flint Ridge mountain bike trails, or see the mountains from above on NOC’s Mountaintop Zip Line.
Leave time to explore downtown Bryson City, visit nearby Fontana Lake, or head into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Deep Creek area of the park is an especially easy addition to a weekend itinerary, with hiking trails and several waterfalls close to town.
Weekend Highlights
- Whitewater rafting the Nantahala River
- Leaf peeping from above on NOC’s Mountaintop Zip Line
- Hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
- Exploring downtown Bryson City
- Visiting Fontana Lake
- Riding the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
When to go for fall color: Current forecasts suggest mid-to-late October should bring widespread color to the elevations around Bryson City and the Nantahala Gorge, with higher Smoky Mountain elevations changing earlier.

3. Brevard, NC
Drive from Atlanta: About 3 hours
Best for: Waterfalls, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and Pisgah National Forest
Expected peak color: Mid-to-late October
If your ideal fall weekend involves hiking boots, waterfalls, and miles of forest, point the car toward Brevard.
Known as the Land of Waterfalls, Transylvania County is home to hundreds of cascades and provides easy access to both Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Recreational Forest.
Start with a roadside stop at Looking Glass Falls or Moore Cove Falls before heading deeper into Pisgah for a hike. Mountain bikers and rock climbers can find plenty of recreation opportunities here, as well. Looking for a single hike with maximum waterfall exposure? Spend a day in DuPont exploring waterfalls like Triple Falls and High Falls.
Afterward, head into downtown Brevard for restaurants, breweries, shops, and a more relaxed evening before another morning outside. We highly recommend grabbing a bite at The Square Root, Eat Love Thai, and Rocky’s Soda Shoppe.
Weekend Highlights
- Looking Glass Falls
- Hiking in Pisgah National Forest
- Exploring DuPont State Recreational Forest
- Mountain biking or rock climbing
- Exploring downtown Brevard
- Scenic drives toward the Blue Ridge Parkway
When to go for fall color: Brevard’s large elevation range makes the season particularly long. The area’s official tourism organization expects opportunities for good color from late September into early-to-mid November, with higher elevations changing well before downtown and the surrounding valleys.

4. Clayton, GA
Drive from Atlanta: About 1 hour, 45 minutes
Best for: Whitewater rafting, waterfalls, hiking, and an easy weekend escape
Expected peak color: Late October
One of the easiest mountain getaways from Atlanta is less than two hours away in Rabun County, Georgia.
Clayton is a walkable mountain town with easy access to waterfalls, hiking trails, and some of North Georgia’s most dramatic landscapes. It’s also a gateway to the Chattooga River, the federally designated Wild and Scenic River flowing along the Georgia-South Carolina border.
Spend Saturday leaf peeping from a raft on the Chattooga with NOC, then head back toward Clayton for dinner and an evening downtown. For a slower Sunday, explore Tallulah Gorge State Park, visit one of the area’s waterfalls, or take a scenic drive through the surrounding mountains.
The short drive from Atlanta makes this an especially good choice if you are limited on time.
Weekend Highlights
- White water rafting the Chattooga River with NOC
- Exploring downtown Clayton
- Hiking at Tallulah Gorge State Park
- Chasing waterfalls around Rabun County
- Scenic drives through the North Georgia mountains
- Local restaurants, shops and wineries
When to go for fall color: North Georgia’s 2026 season is currently expected to follow a typical schedule, with the Georgia Forestry Commission projecting peak season around late October into early November, although elevation and weather can shift conditions locally.

5. Asheville, NC
Drive from Atlanta: About 3 hours, 20 minutes
Best for: Food, arts and culture, whitewater rafting, scenic drives, and hiking
Expected peak color: Late October in Asheville, earlier at higher elevations
For travelers who want to mix outdoor adventure with restaurants, breweries, art and culture, Asheville makes an easy long-weekend destination from Atlanta.
Spend your first evening exploring downtown or the River Arts District. The next morning, head 30 minutes outside the city for a French Broad River rafting trip with NOC. Surrounded by long range views, the river offers a chance to experience Western North Carolina’s fall scenery away from the roads and overlooks.
Another day can be devoted to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore, the North Carolina Arboretum, or hiking in Pisgah National Forest. After days spent exploring, refuel at one of Asheville’s many restaurants and breweries.
Because the Asheville area spans such a large range of elevations, you can also chase the leaves throughout October. Head toward higher Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks earlier in the season and stay closer to Asheville as color moves downhill.
Weekend Highlights
- White water rafting the French Broad River with NOC
- Exploring downtown Asheville
- Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway
- Visiting Biltmore
- Exploring the River Arts District
- Hiking in Pisgah National Forest
- Visiting the North Carolina Arboretum
When to go for fall color: Asheville’s latest 2026 foliage report says this year’s warm September has delayed the progression somewhat. Color around approximately 3,000 feet is currently expected around October 23, with Asheville itself expected to peak during the last week of October. Higher elevations should offer strong color earlier in the month.

6. Chattanooga, TN
Drive from Atlanta: About 2 hours
Best for: Whitewater rafting, hiking, scenic overlooks, and a city-meets-outdoors weekend
Expected peak color: Late October to early November
For another easy fall road trip from Atlanta, head north to Chattanooga and the Ocoee River.
Make Chattanooga your home base and spend time exploring downtown, the Tennessee Riverfront and Lookout Mountain. For a bigger adventure, head east into the mountains for whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River with NOC. Known for continuous rapids and the 1996 Olympic whitewater course, the Ocoee is a great choice for travelers looking to add a little more excitement to a fall weekend.
Back in Chattanooga, explore the trails and overlooks around Lookout Mountain, visit Rock City, or spend an afternoon biking along the Tennessee River. You can also take the scenic route toward the Ocoee through the mountains of Southeast Tennessee, where changing leaves surround the river corridor.
Weekend Highlights
- Whitewater rafting the Ocoee River with NOC
- Exploring downtown Chattanooga
- Hiking around Lookout Mountain
- Visiting Rock City
- Walking or biking the Tennessee Riverwalk
- Exploring the Ocoee River Scenic Byway
- Restaurants, breweries and shopping around Chattanooga
When to go for fall color: Fall color typically develops first in the higher elevations surrounding Chattanooga and the Ocoee before moving into the valleys. Late October into early November is generally a good window for fall foliage around Chattanooga and Southeast Tennessee, although timing varies each year with elevation and weather.

When Is the Best Time for a Fall Road Trip from Atlanta?
In general, early-to-mid October is a good time to head toward higher destinations such as Cashiers and high-elevation sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mid-to-late October brings more color to the mountains around Bryson City, the Nantahala Gorge and Brevard, while late October into early November can bring strong color into lower mountain valleys and parts of North Georgia.
For 2026 specifically, recent reports suggest some areas may run later than earlier preseason forecasts predicted, so checking updated foliage reports is a good idea.
Enjoy your road trip. We hope you’ll stop by a Nantahala Outdoor Center outpost on your adventure!
